This was a fun addition and kitchen remodel project in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood of Philadelphia - which is about a 23 min walk / 9 minute drive to Center City.
The home was built in 1915 - which had some pretty cool original details including exposed mortise and tenon wood joints at the basement stairwell opening (not pictured, sorry!)
I had a great time getting to know the family and their family's needs for the new spaces. Together we selected a few modern farmhouse inspired items, including a white apron front kitchen sink & 4" x 4" ceramic white backsplash tile.
The kitchen was extremely closed off to the rest of the 1st floor and lacking the connection to their exterior entertainment space at the rear of their property. The clients came to us looking for an addition off their rear of their home in order to expand the kitchen and provide them with a larger home for their family. We worked with one of our licensed architect trade partners (because I'm not licensed yet!) to provide them with a 10'-0" 3-story addition that extended their originally 1760 SF home into their rear patio without requiring a zoning variance - which still allows them plenty of room for entertaining and playing and saved us over 3-months of waiting on a zoning approval from the City during design!
The renderings illustrate the expansion of the rear giving way to an expanded eat-in kitchen area. We shifted the sink location and added a few more windows (and a lot more cabinets!) to the alley wall facade to brighten up the space and provide better storage. Selecting white upper wall cabinets also aided to this brightening effect. The key with keeping the color down low, on the base cabinets, provided a light and airy aesthetic.
We had some fun during design, played around with a few different backsplash options and narrowed down our search for the perfect color of the cabinets. We selected Delta's "Champagne Bronze" satin-like brass finish for the fixtures (sink faucet as shown above) and various brushed and aged brass materials that collide traditional finishes (like the brass) with a more modern profile. They have a word for this collision, so to speak, it's called transitional!
